All the way to the bank!

This week, I hosted a webinar for Northern Trust, sharing my video conference best practices from a decade of being on-camera.

Here are my top 3 tips from that session:

  1. Keep ’em engaged: 73% of people work on other stuff during meetings. If your background is distracting, your audio sucks or your WiFi is spotty — that’s one more reason for someone to stop paying attention to you. Be sure to check off all of these important boxes before a meeting, and keep participants engaged by taking polls, asking questions and sharing compelling visuals. Even if you’re leading the call, ask for ideas and encourage discussion wherever possible.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 2. Practice, practice, practice: Technology mishaps happen to everyone. It’s not a matter of “if” — it’s a matter of when! So, practice what you’ll say when you make a mistake. If you find yourself fumbling to figure out how to screen share, try my personal favorite: “Sorry! It was a really long night of Lysoling my vegetables and staring out the window.” ⁣⁣😂 ⁣⁣ 3. Inject your personality: In Journalism School, they teach students that if they have the choice between going to their interviewee’s office or have the interviewee come to them, they should always choose their interviewee’s office. When you’re on someone’s turf, the likelihood that you’ll learn more about them is higher – whether it’s by seeing a photo of their kids on their desk or noticing their college diploma hanging on the wall. The same rules apply in the virtual world: Give people clues to what you’re all about (whether it be books, artwork or the first dollar your business earned hanging on the wall behind you.) This world may feel a lot different these days, but we’re still just humans craving connection.
